In addition to making plaster hand casts, the crew had full body casts made. When completed, the body casts then supported the manufacture of a set of spacesuits custom-made to the astronaut's shape. This was usually a set of three; one to be used for training, one to be used for flight and a third to be held in reserve as a backup suit in the vent of damage to one of the others.
Casts like these were specifically made to create the gloves that each individual astronaut would be issued. It was considered especially important tht the astronaut's hands be capable of holding and operating equipment, some as blunt as scoops and some as fine as cameras.
